This Brooklyn Bridge photograph is a wonderful, historic view of workers on top of the bridge in the late nineteenth century.
The Brooklyn Bridge connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. It is a hybrid cable-stayed or suspension bridge and it is one of the oldest bridges of either type in the United States.
The Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of New York City, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

The iconic Statue of Liberty was built by Gustave Eiffel and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The copper statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States, and was a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad.
Did you know? The construction of the Empire State Building was part of an intense competition in New York for the title of "world's tallest building." Fourty Wall Street and the Chrysler Building, were the other competitors and still under construction when work began on the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building surpassed them upon its completion, on April 11, 1931, 12 days ahead of schedule, just 410 days after construction commenced.
The building was officially opened on May 1, 1931 in dramatic fashion, when United States President Herbert Hoover turned on the building's lights with the push of a button from Washington, D.C.
